“Magnificent Ryokan that has been in the same family for 180 years. It is traditional and beautifully preserved. Staff, food and presentations are outstanding. No other way to describe it. It felt like I was in another era. The rooms were large ( we had one for 4) and have a toilet attached, with basin, The bathrooms are shared but they are simply a treat, real traditional wet rooms with large open baths similar to a hot spring, you get your own private one and it is spotlessly clean. We arrived late so did not have much time to walk around the area - however it is literally 5 min from the main station.”

10“This is a beautiful traditional Japanese inn. It's 170(?) years old and recently refurbished to a high standard. It's been in the same family since it started and the chef is part of the family. We had a traditional Japanese dinner in the dining area (don't have it in your room as you need to see the chef prepare it all for you). The staff were great! They even helped us with the traditional clothing to prepare for dinner. There are three baths that are private but can be used by all guests individually. We had the bath after dinner and it was a very relaxing way to spend our last night in Kyoto.”

Mugen / Best Ryokans in Kyoto

Hatago Mugen, Kyoto

Renovating 160-year-old Machiya (Kyoto style merchant house), MUGEN is a unique inn blended a traditional Kyoto style architecture with sensibility of modernity reminiscent of refined art gallery.

It was 2013 when the Nagamasus (the present owner and his wife) decided to move to Kyoto as a final destination of their journey visiting all over the country over two years. After that, they spent entire two years to renovate an old machiya building under the theme of "travel as if you were to live there", and had finally reached to completion of this MUGEN in 2016.

Guest rooms of total 5 feature each different settings such as a Japanese style room with a Yukimi Shoji (sliding door with a small window to view snow) facing a tsubo-niwa (small garden), a Western style room with a futon bedding on the wood-made flooring, a Japanese style room with a desk-like space on the window side, etc.

In MUGEN, there are neither TVs nor clocks. There is only time that flows calmly beyond the time of eternity. Needless to depend on TV nor clock, this universe itself is filled with information and the approximate time as well can be perceived by the move of the sun and the moon. Time and information which can only be perceived by your five senses. Satisfaction as if you were spending time in the art museum. MUGEN wishes to share such MUGEN experience with as many guests as possible.

One of major attractiveness of journey is to come in touch with local people. In tasteful yet cozy MUGEN bar (renovated an old storage-house featuring white thick wall and black kawara roof), owners' acquaintances, neighbors, travelers, etc. gather around almost every night and enjoy an atmosphere of friendliness to each other. This space has been produced based upon owners' long experience of travel.

*MUGEN (無限、no limits) literaly means "infinity" or "eternity". It can also be written (夢幻, dream and phantom) , meaning "phantasy" or "evanescence"

“First time staying in a Ryokan; the experience was great with a peaceful atmosphere. The public areas and rooms are all clean and well-kept. They do have onsen, though they are heated baths rather than hot-springs (it made no difference to us). We had the Western-style breakfast and the vegetarian kaiseki both days we stayed, and the quality of the food and service was excellent. Most staff spoke moderate to very good English, which was very nice for us. Convenient location next to public transit: the ryokan is about a 5 minute walk (uphill) from the Keage station for the Tozai Line heading into Kyoto.”

9.6“The yachiyo restaurant was excellent. I didn't request for traditional breakfast ahead of time but they were able to accommodate me. Had the 11-course deluxe dinner, and decided I couldn't pass up the breakfast. Both were excellent.”

8.8“The price of this room [Take(bamboo) 竹] is worth it. The room is on the 1st floor of a traditional japanese villa. very spatious rooms with a nice perimeter corridor beyond which there is a delicate garden. The suite comes with a bath room enough for 2 person bathe at the same time. The very low beds(literally laid on the floor) can be difficult for elders. The tofu restaurant is quite pricey.”

8.3“Fantastic place, great to have a true experience of traditional accommodation. I read some reviews and was pleasantly surprised as there was mention that it wasn't up to standard. I think you just need to be ready for something different and keep a open mind! It also takes a day to get used to so be patient!”
