If you're a great fan of Ghibli's 'Spirited Away', this is where you should add to your must-go spots in Japan!!
If you're a fan of Ghibli's 'Spirited Away', Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, there exists a spot you should never miss to visit while staying in Japan. It's Kanaguya!! This 250-year old classical Ryokan was selected by the director, Hayao Miyazaki, as one of model-ryokans for creating the image of 'Aburaya', the main setting of the story. It's castle-like four-story building produces unique yet fantastic atmosphere as you just experienced in the movie.
Kanaguya stands in a tasteful Shibu Onsen district in Nagano pref, about three-hour travel from the central Tokyo. You may be able to view monkey-bathing if you are lucky.
Kanaguya offers a variety of accommodation plans from minimum JPY12,150 to 24,880 (on weekdays). For plan A & B, rooms of cultural property or similar rooms are provided, guests can enjoy the atmosphere as if they slipped into the set of the movie.
Baths:
There are a total of 9 baths in the Inn; 5 which are private (you can enter and lock the door and have it all to yourself) and 4 that are communal baths: one each for men and women-inside and 2 outdoor communal baths (��rotenburo��). Kanaguya��s hot spring water comes from 4 different sources of hot springs in the mountains surrounding the inn.
Guests can also enjoy nine pablic baths dotted around this district for free. Ask for a key at the reception (open 6am~10pm).
Meals:
For dinner, you'll be sreved a Kaiseki Ryori. Each dish is cooked with abundant ingredients harvested in Nagano known as one of long-life prefectures.
