Hongo is well known as a town loved by famous authors of the Meiji and Taisho Periods. In the past, Higuchi Ichiyo and a novelist Shusei Tokuda were holding a residence in this neighborhood, and a mansion of Tokuda is still in shape. Moreover, Bunkyo Ward was once called a "capital of literature (Fumi no Miyako)", as its name suggests, it is wrapped in an academic atmosphere and students' boarding houses and nostalgic cafes are scattered about.

Suikoen is a purely Japanese-style ryokan featuring 7 and 8 seperate cottages scattered in the huge site of more than 3,000 tsubo. Since one-story architecture is employed, cottages retain the original taste of Suikoen founded in the first year of Showa period.
